Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Our class teacher is Miss Page and we also have Miss Jackson and Miss Barton working with us as our teaching assistants. Mrs Caulfield will teach Year 2 on Fridays.

The Year 2 Curriculum maps are attached to this website page. Over the course of the year, children will explore our main History and Geography topics of 'Magnificent Monarchs', 'Our Wonderful World', 'Fire! Fire!' and 'Coastline'. Children will continue to build on the foundations of Key Stage 1, developing confidence, independence and growing a love of learning each day. The curriculum is designed to support steady progress across all subjects while encouraging curiosity, creativity and resilience.

P.E Days in Year 2:

Our P.E days are Tuesdays and Fridays, therefore on both of these days children are to come into school wearing their full St. John's P.E kit. Please ensure they have navy P.E uniform and appropriate footwear. Earrings will need to be removed for both of these days.

Reading and Spelling:

We will continue with our Phonics learning by recapping Phase 5 sounds, before moving onto our Year 2 spelling programme. Support with pronouncing Phase 5 sounds can be found here: https://www.littlewandle.org.uk/resources/for-parents/.

Once children are secure in their Phonics knowledge, we will move onto Bridge for Spelling. This is a spelling focus where we will explore key spelling rules each week. These words will be sent home as part of the children's weekly homework and they will be tested on the spellings, in school, each week.

Please ensure children have their reading record and school reading book in school every day, as we try and listen to children read aloud as much as we can.

Please also listen to your child read aloud at home daily and record anything they have read in their school reading record. This allows us to change reading books accordingly. Ask them questions about what they have read and encourage them to retell a story to improve their understanding of a range of texts. There are question prompts to support this on the inside cover of their school reading record and a document is attached to this page.

Supporting Learning at Home

We really value your support at home. Encouraging your child to read every day, practise times tables, and check their homework helps to build good routines and confidence. Here are some recommended websites that can be accessed from home. These sites provide activities and games to make revision fun and engaging.

KS1 Optional Tests

If you have a child in year 2, at the end of key stage 1 (KS1) they may take part in national curriculum tests in:

  • English reading
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • mathematics

The tests are not mandatory for schools to administer at the end of KS1, but your child’s school may choose to use them to help identify where pupils need additional support as they transition into key stage 2 (KS2).

Please see the parent leaflet for more information.
