Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Year 1. The class will be taught by Miss Sykes, with support from Mrs Beech, who works alongside us in the classroom.
Our Learning This Term
This term, our topic is Childhood. The children will begin to develop their understanding of past and present, using a range of artefacts, photographs and sources to discover what they can tell us about life in the past.
Across the wider curriculum, the children will explore a range of exciting learning opportunities:
- Art: Exploring colour theory and developing our understanding of colour.
- Computing: Discovering the technology that is part of our everyday lives.
- Religious Education: Reflecting on the beauty of God's creation and developing an appreciation for the world around us.
- Science: Exploring the four seasons and observing changes in the natural world.
- English: Using Julia Donaldson's Cave Baby as inspiration for reading, writing and developing our vocabulary.
- Mathematics: Building confidence with counting, recognising numbers and developing our understanding of numbers within 100.
We will also continue to develop the children's independence, confidence and enthusiasm for learning as they settle into the routines and expectations of Year 1.
PE and Homework
PE will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays this term. Our lessons will include outdoor team-building activities as well as gymnastics, helping the children to develop their physical skills, coordination and ability to work together.
Homework will be set each Friday and should be completed and returned by the following Thursday. Homework will include regular opportunities to practise:
- Reading
- Spellings
- Numbots
- Occasional projects linked to our wider curriculum
Supporting Learning at Home
We really value the support you provide at home. Establishing regular routines for reading, spelling and maths practice can make a significant difference to your child's confidence and progress.
We encourage children to read every day, practise their spellings regularly and complete their homework. To make learning at home enjoyable, we have included some recommended websites below.
