Oracy
Speaking and listening are key skills that support learning in every subject. They help students communicate clearly, think more deeply, and work well with others. When used across the curriculum like sharing ideas in science, talking about stories in English, or explaining answers in mathematics, pupils understand more and grow in confidence. Listening helps them learn from others and show our key value of respect, while speaking helps them organise their thoughts and express them clearly. Including these skills in all lessons not only helps pupil progress, but also prepares them for life outside the classroom.
At St. John's we include a 'Talking Tuesday or Thursday' into our weekly timetable. This is a time to discuss a key question of the week, which is also included in our weekly newsletter for pupils to encourage further discussion at home. Children across classes are encouraged to use 'Sentence stems' to communicate and express their ideas clearly aloud to others.
Every class, from EYFS to Year 6, have explored rules for speaking and listening and created their own set of agreed 'non-negotiables'. These are an important part of our daily routines and are sometimes called 'Oracy Rules' or 'Discussion Rules' within our classrooms. We also dip into the Picture News resources to support with this and to discuss global issues around the world.
