Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 – Spring Term

Our Year 5 class is taught by Mrs. Avilez, and we are fortunate to also have Mrs. Acanthe working with us at different times each week. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting Spring Term of learning together! Please look at the Year 5 Curriculum Overview for more information on this term’s learning.

P.E.

For the duration of Spring Term 1 and 2, our P.E. days are Monday and Tuesday. On these days, children should come to school wearing their P.E. kits.

Monday – Gymnastics and Dance. Please also have suitable shoes for outdoors physical activity, as we may also use the good weather days to be outside.

Tuesdays – Swimming at Spiceball Leisure Centre. Children will travel by coach and return in time to eat their lunch. Your child may come to school on Tuesdays wearing their PE kit and bring their swimming kit in a bag. Please remember to send underwear if your child wears their swimming costume or trunks under their PE kit.

Swimming kit:

· A swimming costume, No long, baggy trunks, No two-piece suits, A towel and a swimming hat.

Homework

All online activities are accessible through the school logins and passwords, which are securely noted inside the front cover of your child’s reading journal.

Maths

Children will be using Times Table Rockstars, an online platform that helps them practise and strengthen their multiplication and division facts. We encourage regular use at home, as confident recall of times tables is key to success in many areas of maths learning.

English

Reading

· Children should bring their reading books and reading records to school every day.

· Please record when you hear your child read in their reading record.

· The expectation is that children read at least 20 minutes each day, ideally with an adult to support fluency and comprehension.

Spellings and Grammar

· Spelling homework will be assigned on a Monday and is due in on the Friday, ready for a weekly test.

· Log-in information for Spelling Shed can be found on the inside cover of your child’s reading record.

Occasionally, additional comprehension, grammar or spelling activities may be sent home in their homework folder.

Life Skills and Oracy

Topic and Other Curriculum Areas

Please take a look at our curriculum overview to see the exciting themes and subjects we will be covering this term. From time to time, additional activities linked to these topics may be sent home so that children can extend their learning further. As a whole school we are keen to encourage oracy and life skills activities throughout the year also.

Homework Policy available on line.

Supporting Learning at Home

We really value your support at home. Encouraging your child to read every day, practise times tables, and check their homework helps to build good routines and confidence. Here are some recommended websites that can be accessed from home. These sites provide activities and games to make revision fun and engaging.
