Art Curriculum

Intent, Implementation, and Impact

Art and Design Curriculum Statement

Our curriculum is joined and sequenced properly to ensure that our children avoid gaps in their learning. A globally relevant curriculum helps to facilitate children with a strong world view.

Intent
The National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

At St. John’s RC Primary School, we strongly value Art and Design as an important and impactful part of the children’s entitlement to a balanced and broad curriculum. We believe that Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills with the opportunity to express their individual thoughts and ideas, and this is something we strive to provide our children at St. John’s.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design curriculum at St. John’s Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and supported by a wide range of resources. At St. John’s, we ensure the skills progression of the art and design curriculum are embedded within our approach to art. These skills have been chosen to ensure coverage through our 3-year programme.

At St. John’s, we recognise the importance of raising the profile of art and design and so instead of delivering weekly art lessons, once every half term, a whole school themed art day takes place. The structure of the day means that children study the life and works of a specific artist each term, using their techniques and skills to produce their own work in the artists’ style.

Below is our 3-year cycle which includes an artist covered each term. This allows our children to be immersed and learn about their life, their skills and study the work they have created.

Impact

At St. John’s, we celebrate success through our art and design curriculum when children will:

  • Have developed precision and detail through their skills
  • Have knowledge about key artists and their lives
  • Have developed their understanding of nature and the world around them
