St John's Catholic Primary School

Helen Self

Name: Helen Self

Type of Governor: Foundation

Serving the Governing Body since: December 2019

What do you do for a job and what does it briefly involve?

I am a teacher of Computing at Blessed George Napier Catholic School, the secondary school for which St John’s is one of the main feeder schools. I am a form tutor and teach all year groups from years 7 to 13 and so have a good understanding of how best to prepare pupils for transition to secondary school.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have a young family which keeps me busy with all of their clubs and hobbies such as Irish dancing and rugby. I also enjoy cooking, gardening and spending time with friends. We try to make the most of weekends as a family, doing activities such as going to the theatre, nice walks and visiting new places. We also enjoy travelling, both in the UK and abroad and often try to get away at weekends.

What are your aims for this year in helping guide Saint John’s towards continuous improvements?

As a practising Catholic, I am inspired by Catholic values and how these can be used to enrich the education and lives of the pupils of at St John’s.  I have almost 20 years teaching experience which will enable me to carry out the role of Foundation Governor and I feel well placed to help the school in preparing pupils as they transition to secondary school. I believe that success in education is a result of not just an academic focus, but also providing an environment in which the social, moral and spiritual needs of pupils can be greatly enhanced. I will support St John’s through the Catholic values I am so passionate about.
